Exploring the north of Pakistan : A Solo Traveler’s Journey to Skardu

January 2025

A journey to Skardu by solo travelers reveals the stunning landscapes, rich culture, and personal growth found off the beaten path, as well as the untamed beauty of northern Pakistan.

Traveling solo is often seen as a daring adventure, but for me, it was a dream rooted in childhood memories. During my childhood, my family and I traveled extensively across Pakistan, accompanying my father during his various postings. Those experiences instilled in me a deep love for travel, an appreciation for diverse cultures, and a desire to uncover the rich heritage of our beloved country. In recent years, my fascination with Pakistan’s northern region grew, fueled by stunning images of pristine landscapes and towering mountains on social media. I desperately wanted to explore the famed beauty of Skardu, but finding a travel partner who shared my enthusiasm was a challenge. Luckily, I stumbled upon a travel agency specialising in solo female travel, ensuring safety and convenience. With their guidance, I embarked on an unforgettable journey.
The Journey Begins
Flying from Islamabad to Skardu was an experience in itself. As our plane approached Skardu Airport, I was awestruck by the majestic mountains surrounding the runway. The valley below, cradled by snow-capped peaks and lush greenery, seemed like a dream. The airport, modest yet picturesque, set the tone for what would be an extraordinary adventure.
A driver and guide arranged by the agency met me at the airport. Their warmth and knowledge reassured me, and I immediately felt comfortable exploring this unfamiliar yet welcoming region.
A land of Unparalleled Beauty
Skardu’s charm lies in its unparalleled natural beauty. Nestled in the heart of the Karakoram Range, the valley boasts rugged mountains, serene rivers, and lush vegetation. Over four days, I immersed myself in its wonders, beginning with a visit to Deosai National Park, famously known as the “Land of Giants.” At an elevation of over 4,000 meters, Deosai is one of the highest plateaus in the world. Its expansive plains were dotted with vibrant wildflowers, creating a surreal contrast against the backdrop of imposing mountains. I was fortunate enough to spot Himalayan brown bears and marmots, making the visit even more memorable. The pristine lakes of Skardu left me equally spellbound. The azure waters of Satpara Lake and Sheosar Lake reflected the sky with an almost magical clarity. Each lake was surrounded by untouched wilderness, offering a sense of tranquility I had never experienced before.
Exploring Hidden Gems
Skardu’s valleys are treasures waiting to be discovered. I ventured into Khaplu, a charming valley known for its historic palace, Chunda Valley, adorned with vibrant fields, and Basho Valley, a hiker’s paradise. Each location had its own unique character, from terraced fields to breathtaking trails, and I relished every moment. Walking through these valleys felt like stepping back in time. The simplicity of life, the kindness of locals, and the unspoiled beauty of nature reminded me of the sheer magic that exists in Pakistan’s northern regions.
A feast for the Senses
Traveling is never complete without indulging in local cuisine, and Skardu did not disappoint. I savored traditional dishes like chaapshoro, a meat-filled pastry, and enjoyed freshly caught trout from the rivers. The abundance of fresh produce, including cherries, apricots, apples, and walnuts, was a treat for the taste buds. One of my favorite memories was enjoying a simple yet hearty meal by the riverside, surrounded by towering peaks and the soothing sound of flowing water.
SOUvENIRS AND Stories
Skardu is also a haven for those who love unique souvenirs. The region is known for its gemstones, and I could not resist purchasing a few dazzling pieces as mementos. The intricate craftsmanship of the local artisans was impressive, reflecting the region’s rich cultural heritage. Beyond material treasures, the people of Skardu left an indelible mark on my heart. Their hospitality and warmth were unmatched. Every encounter was filled with kindness, from the villagers’ offering prayers for my safe travels to strangers helping me navigate trails.
