The Famous Banu Musa Brothers

January 2025

Friends! you will be surprised to known that it were the Muslim scientists who actually laid the groundwork for the famous industrial revolution in Europe, and they inspired the future generation of scientists both in the Muslim and non-Muslim worlds. Amongst them most of the credit goes to three Muslim brothers from Baghdad who loved science, mathematics, astronomy, and what not. They had a passion of inventing new things. Known as “Banu Musa Brothers”, they were the ones who first invented machines that could do things on their own, I mean automatically, almost like magic. Their inventions amazed the scientists’ fraternity of that time, and continue to inspire us today.

Who Were Banu Musa Brothers?
The Banu Musa Brothers belonged to the Persian era of Baghdad during the 9th century. Abu Jafar Muhammad bin Musa was the eldest brother, Abu al Qasim Ahmad bin Musa was the middle brother and Al Hassan bin Musa was the youngest brother. They were part of Baghdad’s “House of Wisdom”, a place where scientists, scholars and thinkers from around the world would gather to share ideas and learn from each other. They grew up in a family that valued learning and knowledge. Their father, Musa bin Shakir, was a well-known scholar. When their father passed away, the brothers continued with his legacy, spending hours in studying, experimenting, and building machines and devices. They worked so hard that soon they became experts in making devices that used water, air, and gears to move on their own.
Known for Over 100 Inventions
Banu Musa Borthers are credited with over 100 of their inventions, including the first programmable machine, an automatic flute player, an automatic hydro-powered organ, a feedback controller, etc. The three brothers reported a circumference of 24,000 miles, which is slightly less than the modern figure of 24,902 miles. They wrote more than 20 books on science, including “The Book of Tricks” or “The Book of Ingenious Devices”, which listed over 100 of their inventions. Their work in geometry, and in particular their book “The Measurement of Plane and Spherical Figures” influenced the mathematicians for centuries. Banu Musa Brothers also established the first Arabic-language school of mathematics. Their work actually laid the groundwork for the industrial revolution in Europe. They inspired generations of Muslim scientists and scholars of other nations.
What Was “The Book of Ingenious Devices”?
“The Book of Ingenious Devices” was a collection of over 100 different machines that the three brothers had invented. It was filled with drawings and descriptions, explaining how each machine worked. The book included all sorts of gadgets that could pour liquids, make sounds, or move on their own — things that seemed magical at that time. This book spread their ideas across the world, and inspired other inventors to experiment and create their own devices.
The Three Brothers’ Amazing Inventions
Here are some of their most exciting inventions:
The Self-Filling Water Jug
One of the inventions was a jug that could fill itself every time water was poured out of it. This worked by using air pressure to pull more water up into the jug whenever it was needed. People were amazed by this invention because it looked like the jug was refilling itself like magic!
The Automatic Fountain
Banu Musa Brothers also designed fountains that could change the way they sprayed water. By adjusting pipes and using special designs, the brothers created fountains that could spray in different patterns and shapes, almost like the water was dancing. People would gather around these fountains, fascinated by the changing shapes.
The Musical Flute
The three brothers created a flute that could play music all on its own! Inside the flute, they placed a hidden mechanism that could push air through holes, creating musical notes. This invention was especially popular because it amazed everyone who heard it, as if the flute was magically playing a song on its own.
The Mechanical Peacock
One of their most impressive inventions was a mechanical peacock. This wasn’t just any bird; it could actually pour drinks for guests! When liquid was poured into the peacock, it would tilt and pour it out into cups. This was a favorite at parties and gatherings because it was not only useful but also very entertaining to watch.
How Did They Make These Machines Work?
Banu Musa Brothers didn’t have electricity or motors, so they had to use basic forces like water pressure, air pressure, and gravity to make their machines work. For example, in their self-filling jug, they used air pressure to create a vacuum, which pulled water up to refill the jug when it was empty. They also used gears, pipes, and valves to control the flow of water and air, making the machines move in different ways.
They didn’t invent these ideas from scratch; they learned from earlier inventions by Greek and Roman engineers and then improved on them. By studying and experimenting, they created some of the first “automatic” devices that could perform simple tasks without anyone having to touch them.
Why Were Banu Musa Brothers Important?
The Banu Musa brothers weren’t just inventors; they were pioneers. They were some of the first people to create machines that could work on their own, laying the foundation for what we now call automation. Because of their book, their inventions were shared around the world, allowing other inventors to learn from them. Their ideas and designs were translated into different languages, inspiring scientists and engineers in Europe and Asia.
These brothers showed that machines could be designed to do tasks automatically, which was a new and exciting idea at the time. Today, we have all kinds of machines that work on their own, from coffee makers to robots, and we owe some of these ideas to the three Banu Musa brothers.
The Legacy of Banu Musa Brothers
The story of Banu Musa Brothers reminds us of the power of curiosity and imagination. They dared to ask questions, experimented, and tried new ideas. Their inventions helped in changing the way the people of that time thought about machines. Their work is now inspiring the scientists and engineers of our times. Even though their inventions might seem simple compared to modern technology, they were groundbreaking for their time.
