Building Tomorrow: How the Pakistan Army is Shaping a Digital Generation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir

December 2024

The Pakistan Army has consistently played a pivotal role in fostering development across various sectors in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), with a particular focus on enhancing digital literacy among the youth. On the occasion of Youm-e-Azm-e-Taleem, in honor of the December 16, 2014, Peshawar Army Public School (APS) tragedy, the Brigade of Pakistan Army stationed in the region, has launched significant initiatives aimed at equipping students and young people with essential digital skills, preparing them for the technological demands of the modern world.

One of the key projects undertaken by the Pakistan Army is the establishment of computer labs in APS, particularly in Muzaffarabad. These labs provide students with access to modern computing facilities, enabling them to gain practical experience with computer hardware and software. This hands-on approach is vital for building a strong foundation in technology.

By introducing students to these critical skills, the Pakistan Army is not only enhancing their academic profile but also preparing them for future career opportunities in a tech-driven economy.

In addition to infrastructure development, the  Brigade has implemented a series of digital literacy workshops and training sessions for students. These sessions cover various topics, from basic computer operation and internet usage to more advanced subjects like coding and graphic design. By introducing students to these critical skills, the  Brigade is not only enhancing their academic profile but also preparing them for future career opportunities in a tech-driven economy.
Moreover, the Brigade has partnered with local educators and technology experts to ensure that the training provided is relevant and up-to-date. This collaboration helps in tailoring the curriculum to meet the specific needs of the students in AJK, ensuring they receive an education that is aligned with global technological advancements.
The Brigade has also organized competitions and events to encourage students to showcase their digital projects. These initiatives foster creativity and innovation while instilling a sense of healthy competition among students. Such experiences not only enhance their practical skills but also boost their confidence, motivating them to pursue further education and careers in technology.
Recently, an informative session was conducted in the APS Muzaffarabad auditorium by the Pakistan Army. The session covered details about artificial intelligence (AI), including its history. The presenters explained that AI's journey began in the mid-20th century, evolving from theoretical concepts into a technological revolution that continues to advance. It was a fascinating story of AI, one that remains unknown to many.
The last decade has seen an explosion in AI technology. By the 2010s, machine learning, particularly deep learning, gained significant traction. Companies began harnessing AI for various applications, including natural language processing, image recognition, and autonomous vehicles.
Breakthroughs like OpenAI’s GPT-3 and IBM’s Watson brought AI into the limelight, showcasing capabilities in generating human-like text and winning Jeopardy, respectively. Additionally, advancements in robotics have marked a significant leap forward, creating AI that can interact with the physical world.
As we look to the future, the potential of AI seems limitless. With developments in areas such as reinforcement learning, cognitive computing, and ethical AI, the journey of AI continues to captivate and inspire. However, it also raises important questions about the ethical implications of AI and its impact on jobs and society.

Recently, an informative session was conducted in the APS auditorium by the Pakistan Army. The session covered details about artificial intelligence, including its history.

From its inauspicious beginnings at the Dartmouth Conference in 1956 to the transformative achievements of today’s AI systems, the history of AI reflects human ingenuity and curiosity. The session on AI was concluded with these words, “As technology advances, navigating the balance between innovation and ethical considerations will be paramount. The journey of AI is far from over—it’s an ongoing saga filled with possibilities, challenges, and the promise of a smarter future. we proceed, individuals and society collectively must explore how best to embrace this remarkable technology.”
It remained an interactive and informative session. The audience were amazed to know the fact file of AI.
Through these dedicated efforts, the Brigade is not just contributing to the educational landscape of AJK but is also empowering the youth with the tools needed to thrive in a digital age. The focus on digital literacy is integral to the broader goal of national development and progress, helping to create a generation that is digitally aware, capable, and ready to face the challenges of the future.
The commitment shown by the Brigade towards promoting digital literacy among students in APS Muzaffarabad illustrates a proactive approach towards education in AJK. Their projects not only enrich the students’ learning experiences but also play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide in the region, paving the way for a brighter, more technologically adept future.
