Sports and training competitions are undoubtedly the hallmark of the vibrant environment in garrisons and the military culture across the country. While various events showcase a wide range of participants’ talents, field sports like hockey take center stage as the proud national game. With this spirit, following two weeks of pool and knockout matches between twelve teams, a grand finale was held on October 8, 2024, at a world-class AstroTurf field in Okara Garrison (Al-Barq Division) under dazzling floodlights, energizing a massive crowd of soldiers and community members.
The pitch was further electrified due to the presence of multiple celebrities from the world of sports including the General Secretary of the Pakistan Cycling Federation, Mr. Moazzam Khan Klair; the Executive Director of the Pakistan Federation Baseball; and the Chairman of the Punjab Cycling Association. Other star figures such as Kashif Ali, an international selector from the Pakistan Hockey Federation, Hannan Shahid, the Vice Captain of the Pakistan Hockey Team and Asia's best player, and Ahmed Shakeel Butt, the Captain of the Pakistan Hockey Team, also made their presence felt. They attended the event not only to witness the fierce competition but also to inspire and motivate the young players participating in the final.
Their presence served as a reminder of the high stakes and passion involved in the sport, motivating the athletes to perform at their best. As the match began, the atmosphere was electric, with troops from both sides cheering passionately for their teams. The game was tightly contested, showcasing exceptional skills from both finalists. The players fought hard, each striving to seize control of the match while upholding the principles of sportsmanship. In a nail-biting finish, the victors clinched a single goal, winning the match 1-0. This narrow margin underscored both teams' determination, skill, and resilience.
As the final whistle blew, cheers from the crowd echoed throughout the garrison. The atmosphere was filled with jubilation as the victors celebrated their hard-earned victory. The ceremony that followed was a fitting tribute to the players' hard work and dedication throughout the championship. Chief Guest General Naiknam Muhammad Baig, General Officer Commanding (GOC) Al-Barq Division, presented the trophies to both teams, honoring the champions and runners-up, while other dignitaries awarded individual players with gold and silver medals. The award ceremony was a proud moment for all involved, showcasing the spirit of competition that defines sports. As players and spectators left the field, they carried with them memories of an exhilarating championship and hope for a bright future in Pakistani hockey.
The passing military band signaled not just the end of the game, but the beginning of a legacy. In hockey, it’s not only about the goals scored but the heart left on the field. Champions are made when they push beyond their limits, with passion as their fuel and teamwork as their path to victory.
