Famous writer Oscar Wilde once said, “The best way to make children good is to make them happy”. It means showering children with love and care, enveloping them in a safe and secure environment and raising them with good education would eventually grow them up into good humans. This makes up the rights of every child irrespective of religion, caste and creed. However, not all children are privileged to enjoy a happy childhood as when we look around the world, we come to know that children are suffering a lot. Like:
War in Syria
War since 2011 has affected almost 7.5 million children in Syria. They are in need of humanitarian aid. Their homes are destroyed, families broken and plans jeopardized. They are torn apart from parents and siblings. They are insecure, have psychological and mental problems. At a tender age when children are put to sleep by fairy tales, Syrian children have been facing the horrors of war, loss of loved ones, displacement into temporary tents, epidemics and worsening health conditions.
Hunger and Poverty in African Countries: African countries mainly struggle due to natural catastrophes, hunger and poverty. The biggest challenge for children there is to get a single morsel of food because of extreme poverty, which prevails due to frequent famines and droughts. Parents are left with no other choice but to push their children to earn a living. Health is replaced by stunted growth and the prospect of education or learning is bleak.
Children of Palestine: The people of Palestine are hit by war imposed on them since 1948. They are bearing the peril, the sufferings are huge and getting intense with time. Last year, they were attacked once again on October 7 resulting in an endless genocide. Thousands of children have lost lives turning Palestine into a ‘children’s graveyard’. Children are victims of war, violence, scarcity of food, water and proper shelter and due to inaccessibility of humanitarian aid, their condition is harrowing.
Children of Kashmir: Kashmir has been under the illegal subjugation of India for more than seven decades. Since then, Kashmiri people, women and children are living under extreme violence and brutality at the hands of Indian security forces. Men are abducted, tortured and imprisoned, women are harassed in public on a daily basis, and children are kidnapped, tortured, put in isolation camps and many of them killed mercilessly. Life is extremely difficult in IIOJK as each day unfolds a different problem for the youth and children. They suffer the most as they are direct victims of barbarity. Frequent curfews, shutdowns of electricity and internet, tear gas and pellet gun fires have spread a reign of terror and instilled uncertainty in their lives due to which their work, education and careers suffer. They are unable to attend schools, and visiting hospitals and markets is an ordeal. Food supply remains a grave problem and lives are at stake throughout the day, week and month. Above 60% of children suffer from mental and psychological problems.
Resistance, Resilience and Determination: In spite of living a life in captivity under oppression with little support from the world, no human rights and proper health and education facilities, children of Kashmir and Palestine have resisted the atrocities with much more resilience and determination. The genocide in Palestine has left children mentally and psychologically sick with no proper medical aid. Having each other by their sides is the main factor which gives them hope to live. They sleep under the rubbles and eat just one meal during the day. In the worst case scenarios, they even fill their tummies with grass to survive. Despite unprecedented difficulties, their extraordinary resolve and bravery is even more unprecedented.
Likewise, the Kashmiri children traumatized by regular torture, abuse of power, insecurities and lack of normal life stand tall with the determination of getting rid of the Indian oppressors and living a life of their choice in peace. Their unwavering faith and commitment to freedom movement is matchless. Their enduring struggle sends a powerful message to the world that they would not compromise on their demand for solution of Kashmir dispute unless they get their inalienable right to self-determination, in accordance with the UN Security Council’s resolutions.
Conclusion
The World Children’s Day on November 20 reminds us that children are the building blocks of a nation, the stronger the foundation, the better a nation. Proper education, equality in every aspect of life, good healthcare and the supply of unconditional love is what it requires to shape them up into happy children. Keeping them away from any kind of violence at home or outside ensures their optimal mental health and positive growth in life. Believing and supporting their aspirations and dreams allow them to fly high once they are out in the world.
Saying that, the children who are undergoing a difficult time in life need not lose hope, as for now, the circumstances might seem unfavorable for their growth but one day, the war will end. Sooner or later freedom will be achieved. It’s just a matter of time.
