Bridging Divides My Experience as a UN Peacekeeper

October 2024

The Pakistan Army Lady Officers have emerged as trailblazers in the realm of international peacekeeping with their pivotal roles under the United Nations flag. The involvement of women in conflict zones, such as Congo (MONUSCO), has significantly enhanced the effectiveness of peacekeeping missions. Their presence contributes a vital and compassionate dimension to addressing the needs of the most vulnerable groups, notably women and children. Through medical outreach programs, community engagement, and leadership in complex, multilingual environments, they have built trust and delivered essential services, making a substantial impact on local communities.  Despite facing challenges like language barriers and homesickness, their resilience has prevailed, demonstrating that women are indispensable to global peace efforts.

These officers not only serve as peacekeepers but also as role models, inspiring women in Pakistan and beyond to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields. Their service emphasizes the importance of gender equality in military operations and reaffirms Pakistan’s commitment to promoting peace globally. As they navigate personal sacrifices alongside professional duties, the Lady Officers of the Pakistan Army consistently demonstrate that women can lead with strength, compassion, and unwavering dedication, even in the most challenging environments.
The Lady Officers of the Pakistan Army have demonstrated exceptional resilience and flexibility amidst the turmoil of the conflict zone. They have played a pivotal role in engaging with local communities, particularly by addressing the needs of women and children, who are often the most vulnerable during conflicts. Through medical outreach programs and trust-building efforts, they have significantly improved access to healthcare and provided essential services. Their involvement has not only enhanced the effectiveness of peacekeeping missions but also empowered local women, fostering a sense of safety and optimism.
Serving in the Pakistan Army Contingent under the United Nations flag in Congo (MONUSCO) has been a transformative experience. The responsibility and dedication required to maintain peace in such a fragile region are both commendable and inspiring. The Lady Officers of the Pakistan Army have gained invaluable insights into the significance of leadership in a diverse, multilingual environment. They have encountered numerous obstacles, such as language barriers and the unpredictability of conflict zones, yet these challenges have only strengthened their resolve and underscored the importance of their role as Lady Officers. Reflecting on our mission, I am filled with both pride and a deep sense of purpose. We, the Lady Officers of the Pakistan Army, have proven that we can make a significant impact in UN peacekeeping missions. Our presence serves as a powerful reminder that peace and security are not the exclusive domain of men; women have an equally vital role in upholding global peace and stability. Through our collaboration with the Congolese community, we, as Lady Officers, have directly witnessed the strength and resilience of the local population. This experience has deepened our commitment to making a positive impact on their lives while challenging prevailing stereotypes. Our efforts also inspire a new generation of Pakistani women to pursue careers in fields traditionally dominated by men.
To mitigate feelings of homesickness, I rely on technology such as email, phone calls, and video chats to stay connected with my family. Setting personal and professional goals has helped me remain focused on my mission, providing a strong sense of purpose. Additionally, having a supportive network of fellow officers and colleagues has been invaluable.
Balancing family life with a career is always challenging, especially as a woman. I had to make several arrangements, including financial planning and ensuring a strong support network to care for my family during my tenure on the Mission. My colleagues offered invaluable emotional support and practical advice for navigating these challenges. By focusing on the broader goals of the mission and the positive impact it has on the local community, I stayed motivated and centered.
The role of women as a military component in the United Nations Peacekeeping is undeniable. Our contributions have strengthened the military’s capabilities but also inspired social change and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to gender equality. This journey serves as a beacon of hope and progress, proving that with determination and support, women can excel in any field, even in the most challenging environments. As Pakistan continues its support of international peacekeeping efforts, the role of female officers will undoubtedly grow, further solidifying their position as integral members of the global peacekeeping community.
The Lady Officers of Pakistan have made substantial contributions to the UN peacekeeping missions, demonstrating remarkable dedication and resilience. These missions often take us thousands of miles away from our families and homeland, yet we embrace this challenge with a strong sense of duty and purpose.
Our roles go far beyond mere presence; we are actively involved in community building, conflict resolution, and humanitarian efforts, all aimed at fostering stability in conflict-affected regions. Each officer brings unique skills, cultural insights, and a deep commitment to empowering local communities particularly women and children, who are often the most vulnerable in these situations.
By spreading the message of peace and hope, we not only represent Pakistan but also embody the values of solidarity and cooperation essential in today’s world. Our experiences abroad strengthen our resolve and enable us to contribute meaningfully to global peace efforts while inspiring future generations of women in the armed forces to pursue similar paths. Through our service, we demonstrate that women can be powerful agents of change, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of those we serve. HH
