The threat of climate change is one of the greatest challenges our planet faces today. Rising global temperatures, melting glaciers, and increasingly severe weather patterns are just a few of the alarming indicators that our climate is undergoing significant and potentially catastrophic changes.
At the heart of this crisis lies the urgent need to address the primary driver – the human-induced greenhouse gas emissions. One of the most effective and natural solutions to mitigating climate change is the expansion of plant-based ecosystems through strategic reforestation and afforestation efforts. Trees and other vegetation play a crucial role in absorbing and storing atmospheric carbon, while providing a wealth of additional environmental, economic, and social benefits.
Realizing the significance of this issue, Pakistan Army started this year with the plantation drive in Azad Jammu & Kashmir with effect from 23rd March, which continued till the Independence Day of Pakistan, on 14th August. The purpose of this drive was to play an active role in making this land, a better place to live in. The students from Aftab Hussain Shaheed Army Public School started plantation in Neelum Ground with the help of Army jawans. The drive went well with added zeal and zest, aimed at planting saplings and taking care of the already planted trees.
Since its inception, the Green Drive plantation project has blossomed into a beacon of hope and environmental stewardship across the region. The saplings planted by the valiant soldiers have taken root, transforming barren landscapes into vibrant forests teeming with life. Birds sing melodies of gratitude as once-degraded lands now burst forth with greenery, showcasing nature’s remarkable ability to heal and thrive when given the chance.
From 23rd March, 2024, the Army supervised the launch of this mega tree plantation campaign in Neelum Valley, Jhambar, and Kündal Shahi areas, where the students and locals enthusiastically participated. To compensate the damage caused to trees affected by frequent fires in the forests, it was reiterated to plant 15 saplings for each fallen tree.
Before launching the Green Drive, posters and pamphlets were distributed in various villages of the area to raise awareness. The officers representing Pakistan Army and Forest Department stressed upon the importance of forests. After the ceremony, an awareness walk was organized about the tree plantation campaign to involve as many citizens as possible.
They are now proud caretakers of the land, ensuring the long-term success of the Green Drive. This project is making a real difference, not just in the environment but also in the lives of the people who live there.
