The newly inducted, first MILGEM class, multi-purpose Corvette Pakistan Navy Ship (PNS) Babur sailed from Istanbul, Türkiye, to its return passage to Pakistan. On its passage, the ship conducted port calls and participated in a series of joint exercises with friendly navies. Before it sailed to its home country, the training of the crew of PNS Babur was completed at Gölcük Naval Base, Türkiye. Turkish Naval Forces (TNF) and Pakistan Navy (PN) jointly organized the first-of-its-kind training. The purpose of the training was to train the ship's crew for various naval operations and to further strengthen the mutual relationship between the two navies. During the training, Commander Gölcük Naval Base and Commanding Officer (CO) Istanbul Naval Shipyard visited the ship. Top officials of the TNF also appreciated the operational and training standards of the PN. PNS Babur participated in PN-TN Bilateral Exercise Turgutreis-IX at Naval Base Aksaz, Türkiye.
Upon arrival at Naval Base Aksaz, Rear Admiral Yusuf Akyuz, Commander of the Turkish Navy Southern Task Group, welcomed the ship. During interaction with the CO of PNS Babur, matters of mutual interest and bilateral cooperation were discussed.
The exercise encompassed harbour and sea phases to rehearse various maritime operations and enhance interoperability. During the harbour phase, briefings, tabletop discussions, and exercise coordination meetings were held onboard PNS Babur. During the sea phase, PNS Babur and Turkish fleet units, including ADA Class Corvette TCG Heybeliada, Submarine TCG Doganay, and SH-70B helicopter, conducted joint maritime exercises and operations to enhance interoperability between both navies.
During the passage to Pakistan, PNS Babur paid tribute to Turkish martyrs while passing in front of the First World War Memorial in Canakkale Strait.
PNS Babur visited Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and conducted a passage exercise with the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) ship. Upon arrival at Jeddah port, the ship was received by senior officials of RSNF and Naval Attaché of Pakistan. During a stay at port, the CO of PNS Babur also called on RSNF Deputy Western Fleet Commander, Rear Admiral Yahya Mohammad Majrashi.
Later, PNS Babur and HMS Al Riyadh of RSNF conducted PASSEX and rehearsed various joint maritime exercises and operations. PNS Babur's visit to Jeddah and participation in PASSEX allowed both countries to strengthen their defense collaboration and everlasting friendship further.
Upon arrival at Salalah Port, PNS Babur was warmly welcomed by officials of the Royal Navy of Oman and the diplomatic staff of Pakistan. During the stay at the port, various bilateral activities, including passage exercises, exchange visits, orientation visits to military installations, and coordination meetings, were conducted.
Upon arrival to Karachi, an impressive reception ceremony was held at PN Dockyard. Commander Pakistan Fleet Vice Admiral Muhammad Faisal Abbasi was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
While addressing the ceremony, Commander Pakistan Fleet highlighted that PN MILGEM class corvettes will significantly enhance the PN’s capability of safeguarding the maritime frontiers of Pakistan and reinforce the initiative of the PN for independently conducting Regional Maritime Security Patrols (RMSP) in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). He also emphasized that the MILGEM class project is a manifestation of Pak-Türkiye defense cooperation.
Commander Pakistan Fleet highlighted the strong bond of friendship and bilateral ties between Pakistan and Türkiye. He also acknowledged the professional competence of Istanbul Naval Shipyard and expressed confidence in the prospects of future cooperation in transferring cutting-edge Naval technology to the PN. As per the MILGEM project, four Corvettes comprising two each will be built in Istanbul and Karachi Shipyard, respectively. Many PN officers and Chief Petty Officers (CPOs)/Sailors attended the PNS Babur reception ceremony.
