Celebrating Pakistan’s 77th Independence

August 2024

The 77th independence day of Pakistan is a day of joy, patriotism, and celebration across the country where the streets and buildings are adorned with the national flag, patriotic songs fill the air, and people from all walks of life come together to celebrate this significant day. However, celebrating Independence Day is an art in itself. There are do’s and don’ts, unique tips, and even some light-hearted advice that can make your celebration both memorable and responsible.

Flaunting the Green and White
Embrace the spirit of the day by donning the national colors. While the green symbolizes the majority of Muslims in Pakistan and white represents the minorities. By wearing the combination of green and white one bespeaks the tolerant coexistence and prosperity of the nation regardless of differences.
If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, why not add a touch of face paint or a fun accessory like a hat or a scarf? Just remember, subtlety can be stylish too—no need to look like a walking green flag!
Go Eco-Friendly
Decorating your home or office is a great way to show your patriotism. Opt for eco-friendly decorations like fabric flags, reusable banners, and LED lights. Avoid single-use plastics and paper decorations that contribute to waste.

Community Service
Independence Day is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community. Organize a neighborhood clean-up, visit a local orphanage or old-age home, or plant trees. These acts of kindness embody the spirit of unity and solidarity.
Educate and Reflect
Take some time to learn about the history of Pakistan’s independence. Read books, watch documentaries, or attend local events. Reflect on the struggles and sacrifices that led to the nation’s freedom.
Dos and Don’ts of Independence Day
Do Display the Flag Respectfully

Ensure the national flag is hoisted properly and displayed with respect. It should never touch the ground or be used as a drapery or clothing. Make sure it is the right way up and fastened tightly.
Do Participate in Official Celebrations
Attend flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, and cultural events organized by local authorities. It’s a great way to feel connected to the community and the nation at large as it manifests a feeling of unity and resilience.
Do Share Positivity on Social Media
Use your social media platforms to spread positivity, share historical facts, and stories of heroism. Encourage others to celebrate responsibly and respectfully by exercising tolerance towards the marginalized populace.

Do Respect Diversity
Independence Day is a time to celebrate unity in diversity. Respect and appreciate the different cultures, languages, and traditions that make Pakistan unique.
Don’t Engage in Unlawful Activities
Celebrating independence does not mean ignoring the law. Activities that threaten the peace and risk emotional and physical trauma to others and oneself are not patriotic in spirit. Avoid reckless driving and hooliganism, as well as vandalism which threatens the principles of discipline stated by Quaid-i-azam Muhammmad Ali Jinnah.
Don’t Increase Noise Pollution
While you may sing and cheer for the joy of independence restrict the use of whistles, vuvuzelas, trumpets and horns. The spirit of compassion is imbued in the spirit of independence as your style of celebration could be a nuisance for a suffering patient or a scared animal. Instead, witness the talent of marching bands and folk singers to celebrate the heritage of Pakistan.
Don’t Forget the Sacrifices
Independence Day is not just about celebration; it’s about remembering the sacrifices made by countless individuals. Show respect and honor their memory by celebrating responsibly. Desecrating graves or public monuments commemorating the shuhudas is an act of defiance against the foundations of Pakistan.
Fireworks: A Boom and a Bane
Fireworks have long been a traditional part of Independence Day celebrations, adding a burst of color and excitement to the night sky. However, it’s important to recognize the downside of these dazzling displays.
•    Fireworks release harmful chemicals and particulate matter into the air, contributing to air pollution. This can have serious health impacts, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions. Moreover, the debris left behind can litter streets, parks, and waterways, posing a hazard to both wildlife and humans.
•    The loud noises from fireworks can be terrifying for animals, especially strays who have no place to hide. Pets and stray animals often experience extreme stress, leading to panic and sometimes even injury. As responsible citizens, we should consider these effects and seek alternatives to traditional fireworks.
Eco-Friendly Alternatives:
Laser Light Shows: These can be just as visually stunning without the harmful side effects of fireworks. Many cities around the world are adopting laser shows as a safer, cleaner way to celebrate.
Biodegradable Lanterns: Sky lanterns made from biodegradable materials can create a beautiful, serene visual display without the noise and pollution of fireworks.
Silent Fireworks: Some companies now produce fireworks that minimize noise while still providing a vibrant light show. These are a great compromise, offering the spectacle without the distressing noise.

The Paper Flag Dilemma:
Paper flags have been a staple of Independence Day celebrations for decades. They’re cheap, easy to distribute, and widely available. However, their use comes with significant downsides.
Waste of Paper: Millions of paper flags are produced and discarded every year, leading to a significant amount of waste. This is particularly problematic in a country like Pakistan, where waste management infrastructure may not always be equipped to handle such a large influx of disposable items.
Sacrilege: Many people consider the improper disposal of paper flags disrespectful to the national symbol. Flags often end up on the ground, in garbage bins, or littering public spaces, which can be seen as a dishonor to the country.
Alternatives to Paper Flags:
Cloth Flags: These are durable, reusable, and respectful to the national symbol. Invest in a few good-quality cloth flags that can be used year after year.
Digital Flags: In the age of technology, digital flags can be displayed on screens, projected onto buildings, or shared on social media. They carry no environmental impact and can reach a broad audience.
Creative Displays: Use lights or flowers, to create flag displays. These can be innovative, beautiful, and eco-friendly.

Pakistan’s Independence Day is a time to celebrate the nation’s rich history, culture, and achievements. By following some simple tips and tricks, and being mindful of the dos and don’ts, we can ensure that our celebrations are both joyful and responsible. Let’s embrace eco-friendly practices, consider the impact of our actions on the environment and animals, and honor the spirit of independence with respect and unity. Whether you’re attending a parade, hosting a picnic, or simply enjoying the day with loved ones, make this Independence Day one to remember for all the right reasons.
Happy Independence Day to Everyone!
