Preventing Yourself from the Scorching Summer Beat the Heat

July 2024

Friends! While you enjoy your summer vacations, you need to take extra caution about how to prevent yourself from heat. As the summer sun beats down and temperatures soar, the risk of heat stroke becomes a serious concern.

Symptoms of Heat Stroke:
•    High body temperature (above 104°F or 40°C)
•    Altered mental state or behavior, such as confusion, agitation, or hallucinations
•    Rapid pulse
•    Flushed, hot, dry skin or profuse sweating
•    Nausea and vomiting
•    Headache
•    Rapid breathing
•    Muscle cramps or weakness
Here’s how you can stay safe from these extreme temperatures:
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, throughout the day.
Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in light colors to reflect sunlight and heat.
Stay Indoors During Peak Hours: Limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Use Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from sunburn, which can inhibit your body's ability to cool itself.
Slow Down Before You Cool Down! Never hop right under a fan or the AC after coming from outside. Give your body a minute to adjust. Slow and cool wins the race! By slowing down, you'll feel cooler and more comfortable much faster.
Don’t Overwork Yourself: Avoid strenuous physical activity in hot and humid conditions, especially if you are not acclimatized to the heat.
