The Exemplary Lives of the Prophet’s Grandsons Hazrat Imam Hassan (RA) and Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA)

July 2024

Hazrat Imam Hassan (RA) and Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) are the two most revered and illustrious brothers in the history of Islam. They are the grandsons of the Prophet (PBUH) who loved them the most. They are the beloved sons of Hazrat Fatima tu Zahra (RA) and Hazrat Ali (RA) – the former was the beloved daughter of the Prophet (PBUH) while the latter was the immediate cousin of the Prophet (PBUH) whose father, Abu Talib had played a major role in the Prophet’s upbringing and raising. Hassan (RA) and Hussain (RA) were not only revered because of their most honorable relationship with the Last Messenger of God (PBUH), but also they were famous because of their piety, wisdom, and the deep love and respect they commanded from their family and followers. As the grandsons of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), their lives were marked by significant events and teachings that hold profound lessons for Muslims, particularly the youth in the Muslim world including Pakistan.

The Tribe, Family, and Childhood
The elder brother, Hazrat Imam Hassan (RA), was born in 625 AD, and the younger brother Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) was born in 626. Both were born in Madina. They belonged to the Banu Hashim clan of the Quraish tribe. Their father’s name was Hazrat Ali (RA), who was the first cousin of the Prophet (PBUH). Their mother’s name was Hazrat Fatima tu Zahra (RA), the beloved daughter of the Prophet (PBUH). Both Hazrat Hassan (RA) and Hazrat Hussain (RA) were named by the Prophet (PBUH). To celebrate Hassan and Hussain’s birth, the Prophet (PBUH) sacrificed a ram on both occasions. Both were brought up in the household of the Prophet (PBUH). It is said that Hazrat Imam Hussain had a close resemblance with the Prophet (PBUH).
The Prophet’s Love for His Grandsons
The Prophet (PBUH) showed immense love and affection towards his grandsons, treating them with tenderness and care. He often expressed his affection publicly, teaching the Ummah about the importance of loving and caring for children. An instance of his deep affection is reflected in his words: “Hassan and Hussain are the leaders of the youth in Paradise (Shabab al Jannah).” (Sahih al-Tirmidhi) The Prophet (PBUH) frequently played with his grandsons (RA), carrying them on his shoulders, putting them on his chest, and allowing them to climb on his back during prayers. This act not only showed his immense love for grandsons but also demonstrated the Prophet’s humility and the importance of treating children with kindness and patience. His actions were a clear message to his followers about the value of compassion and the nurturing of familial bonds. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever loves them (Hassan and Hussain) loves me, and whoever hates them hates me.”
Affection from Hazrat Fatima (RA)
Hazrat Fatima tu Zahra (RA), the beloved daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), was known for her piety, modesty, and immense love for her children. She devoted herself to their upbringing, ensuring that they were nurtured in an environment filled with love, faith, and wisdom. She often recited prayers and Verses from the Quran to them, instilling in them the spiritual and moral values that would guide their lives. Her dedication to her children’s education and spiritual growth was evident in her actions and words. She taught them the importance of truthfulness, bravery, and compassion. Her own life, marked by simplicity and devotion, served as a living example for Hazrat Imam Hassan (RA) and Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) to emulate.
Guidance from Hazrat Ali (RA)
Hazrat Ali (RA), the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), was renowned for his vast, profound, and in-depth knowledge, besides his wisdom and bravery. As a father, he played a crucial role in the upbringing of his sons, Imam Hassan (RA) and Imam Hussain (RA), imparting to them lessons in justice, leadership, and righteousness. He would often engage his sons in discussions about the teachings of the Quran and the Hadith, encouraging them to think critically and understand the deeper meanings of their faith. His example as a just and brave leader who always stood for truth and justice left a lasting impression on his sons.
Lessons for Children and Youth
The lives of Hazrat Imam Hassan (RA) and Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) offer numerous lessons especially for the children and youth in Pakistan and in the Muslim world. Their stories are not just historical accounts but a source of timeless wisdom and guidance. One of the most significant lessons is the importance of strong family bonds. We the children can learn to value our parents and siblings, understanding that a supportive family is a cornerstone of a fulfilling life.
Emphasis on Education and Knowledge
Hazrat Imam Hassan (RA) and Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) were brought up in an environment that emphasized the importance of education and knowledge. Their father, Hazrat Ali (RA), who is called as “the Gateway to Knowledge” ensured that his children were well-versed in the Quran and Hadith. We, the children, should be encouraged to pursue knowledge, both religious and worldly, with the same enthusiasm and dedication.
Upholding Truth and Justice
The lives of Hazrat Hassan (RA) and Hazrat Hussain (RA) were marked by their unwavering commitment to truth and justice. It was Hazrat Imam Hussain’s clear and truthful standpoint against a tyrannical and autocratic rule that led to the Battle of Karbala, which is a poignant example of sacrificing for the greater good and standing against oppression. Despite these hardships, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) continued to spread the message of peace, tolerance, and social justice, urging the people to stand against oppression and tyranny. The most defining moment in the life of Imam Hussain (RA) came on the plains of Karbala. The Battle of Karbala has a lesson for the children and youth who can learn the value of integrity, bravery, and standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity, no matter how grave are the consequences.

The Holy Prophet’s love and affection for his grandsons teaches us the importance of compassion and humility. We can learn to be kind and gentle with others, understanding that true strength lies in humility and compassion. Emulating the Prophet’s (PBUH) behavior towards children, they can grow into empathetic and caring individuals. The upbringing of Hazrat Imam Hassan (RA) and Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) was deeply rooted in their spiritual and moral development. Their mother, Hazrat Fatima tu Zahra (RA), played a crucial role in instilling in them the values of faith and morality.
