Traversing Pakistan: A Land of Mesmerizing Beauty and Adventure

June 2023

Due to its immense natural beauty and hospitality, the tourism industry of Pakistan attracts international tourists, bloggers and the business community while promoting the peaceful image of Pakistan, thus becoming one of the top tourism destinations.

Pakistan has been classified as the world’s top travel destination for 2018 by the British Backpacker Society, and “one of the friendliest countries on Earth, with mountainous scenery that is beyond anyone’s wildest imagination.” Forbes ranked Pakistan as one of the ‘top ten coolest places to visit in 2019.’ Pakistan was ranked number one on Condé Nast Traveller’s list of twenty best holiday destinations for the year 2020. Lonely Planet, a travel guide book publisher, recognized Pakistan’s tourism as the next big thing.’ Pakistan’s mountain ranges comprise the famous Himalayas, Karakoram and the Hindu Kush. There are numerous high peaks in Pakistan, with the tallest being K2, also called Mount Godwin Austen, located at 8,611 metres, the second highest in the world. The country is blessed with five out of the fourteen highest mountain peaks of the world. Pakistan is gifted with a number of historical and natural treasures. A land full of opportunities and breathtaking places, Pakistan is a must-visit travel destination once in a lifetime. Located in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), the Hunza Valley is one of Pakistan’s beautiful valleys. This mesmerizing valley is nestled between the Himalayas and the Karakoram mountain peaks. It is one of the best places to visit in Pakistan because of its thriving farmlands. Here one can spot markhors, ounces, ibexes and red foxes. In this valley, a glorious view awaits you and the locals are warm and friendly.
Despite a troubled history, Swat Valley’s present situation is very encouraging. There’s something fairy tale-like about this eye-catching valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province. Being one of the most pleasing tourism destinations to visit in Pakistan, the Swat Valley provides a great weather and hospitable locals. Visitors can enjoy trekking, hiking, backpacking, or simply enjoy in the natural environment. The year 2019 also attracted various international bloggers, including the popular Polish travel blogger Eva Zu Beck, an American writer and director Cynthia Ritchie, food blogger Mark Wiens, and an American video blogger Drew Brinsky. These eminent bloggers shared their experiences with the international community while emphasizing the beauty of hospitable Pakistan. The unforgettable stories shared by these international bloggers and the visit of the royal couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton, have repositioned Pakistan as an international tourist destination.

Considering Pakistan’s success story of tourism in 2019, it must also be remembered that re-adopting tourism is only a one-year initiative, and the continued efforts of the public and private sectors to realize their full potential may take some time. In addition to developing the infrastructure, human capital development is critical to creating a skilled workforce in the industry. With the help of private organizations and donors, each regional tourism agency can play an important role in establishing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by building local resource centers to train workers and develop their skills in different areas of the tourism industry. Pakistan with its slogan, “it’s beautiful, it’s Pakistan”, has managed to generate interest of travelers from across the globe. Pakistan is working hard to promote itself as ‘Emerging Pakistan’, thus promoting a reasonable tourism offer, with a safe and hospitable environment. Along with business visits and leisure travel, a large number of tourists are overseas Pakistanis. Leisure has been a major reason for travel for the vast majority of domestic tourists and a sizeable majority of inbound tourists in 2019. Major cities of Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad are the leading destinations for business travel.
There is a constant rise in tourists to the northern areas of Pakistan, especially the Swat Valley, which is also known as the “Switzerland of Pakistan”.
Skardu Valley lies in the Karakoram Range of GB in the far northern Pakistan. Being my most favorite destination in the mountainous region of Pakistan, Skardu Valley offers a lot to the wanderers that one can never expect and ever forget. The road leading towards Skardu Valley, often dubbed as the eighth wonder of world, provides breathtaking views. The valley has a rich cultural history with beautiful traditions, similar to the culture and traditions of Tibet. However, Skardu is the Baltistan in Gilgit-Baltistan region, which is known as ‘little Tibet’.

The name given due to its heavenly beauty, Fairy Meadows lie in the far Himalayan mountains of GB in the northern areas of Pakistan. The destination is famous because of the dark alpine forest in the surrounding, lush green meadows in the center, and the marvelous mighty Nanga Parbat peak (8,126 m). Nanga Parbat, known as the ‘Killer Mountain’ is the second among the highest peaks of Pakistan. On the other hand, the peak is the ninth largest in the world. In the Fairy Meadows, one can explore some beautiful regions by trekking towards Beyal Camp and base camp of Nanga Parbat. Beyal Camp is known to be the first camp of the Killer Mountain. To reach this fairyland, one has to take an adventurous jeep ride, which is the world’s most dangerous jeep track along with trekking for around three hours through the dense woods. It’s a land that holds a reservoir of knowledge for archaeologists, historians, artists, teachers and anthropologists, and it contains a deep religious heritage for pilgrims of various faiths and beliefs.
