On April 28, 2023 the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) announced the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture for Professor Yasmeen Lari, Pakistan’s first female architect. The award, one of the highest honors for architecture and the first to be personally approved by King Charles III, recognizes Yasmeen Lari’s work in championing zero-carbon self-build concepts for refugees. The Royal Gold Medal will be officially presented to Yasmeen Lari in June 2023.
Lari received the medal for her work related to zero-carbon self-built houses for refugees. Homes designed and conceived by Lari are becoming models around the world for climate resistant housing. She is the first Pakistani and only the second woman to ever receive the honor. In 2020, Yasmeen Lari was also awarded the Jane Drew Prize for her extensive humanitarian work over the last two decades.
