Mango: A Season’s Delight

April 2025

A small girl Aliza was living in a small house. In front of the house was a small garden place, but there was no plant in it. This made Aliza sad. One day, her mother gave her some mangoes. She ate one by one. The mangoes were so sweet that she even wanted to eat the seeds but those were too hard. She took a stone and cracked the seeds. Then she hid the seeds into the garden place soil.

Every day, Aliza would water the plants and took much care. It was surprising for her that the seeds bore tiny and tender leaves. After a year, the seeds turned into small plants. Aliza was very happy. Now she really had plants in her garden. However, she wondered why no mangoes were appearing. Her mother told her that mango trees take much time to grow and bear fruit. “How much time?” she asked.
Her mother said: “Generally, mango trees start bearing fruit within three to six years after planting. However, some varieties may take longer, up to 8 years or more, while others may start producing fruit earlier.”
“How long does it take to grow 1 mango?” she asked.
“In terms of mango tree growth stages, it takes approximately four months for the mangoes to mature on the tree before they’re ready for harvest.” her mother informed.
Satisfied with her mother’s answers, Aliza decided to wait, giving more time to the plant to grow as a sound and strong tree.
A year passed but to no avail. Her mother took her to a farmer, Sir Ali, who had enough knowledge about the various species of plants.
Aliza asked Sir Ali, “What’s wrong with us, why aren’t the trees bearing fruits?”
The farmer replied: “Actually we need to understand the soil first whether it is well-draining, loamy soil with a slightly acidic or not? We need to improve the soil fertility by adding organic matter such as compost or well-rooted manure. Secondly, it is important as and when to water the plants.”
Aliza’s mother invited Sir Ali to visit their home and teach them how to take care of the soil as well as the plants. Aliza was very happy that the farmer promised to visit her garden and give her important tips for growing mango trees and bearing fruit.
Before the farmer arrived, Aliza took her diary and noted down some points to ask relevant questions about the mango trees. Aliza and her mother had invited Sir Ali for Iftar-dinner. Sir Ali came to them after Asr prayers, and they straight went to the garden. The farmer was very delighted to see that Aliza and her mother were taking so much interest in gardening, which is not only ecofriendly but also a healthy activity indoors.
Aliza opened her diary and asked various questions she had already noted down. Sir Ali gave it a glance and said, “I’ll give you brief answers in writing so that you keep it with you and get guidelines as and when you needed it.” Sir Ali’s practical tips cleared many of Aliza’s doubts. After Iftar-dinner, the farmer left, and Aliza patiently started waiting for the plants to grow.
Years passed. The plants did not have mangoes. Now she knew that they will have to wait for three more years. But when in another next three years the trees didn’t bear mangoes, she desperately said: “I will not wait any longer.” The girl grew up as a young woman. The trees became bigger. Aliza used to sit under the trees because of their thick shade.
One day, as Aliza was lying in the shade of a tree, she looked up and got amazed. She screamed with astonishment. A few mangoes were hanging on some of the branches. She plucked one from it. The mango was sweet and bitter but very tasty. It was very happy moment for her. The everyday produce helped the family in earning money, and soon they become rich.
