Stamping Stories: Pakistan Armed Forces’ Journey Preserved in Philatelic Art (1947-2023)

Pakistan Armed Forces have been a regular feature of commemorative stamps highlighting the achievements of the personnel and its various institutions.

Pakistan has the seventh most significant military force in the world in terms of active military personnel. Pakistan Armed Forces consist of three major branches: Army, Navy and Air Force, in addition to several para-military forces and the forces of the Strategic Plans Division. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee is at the top of the chain of command alongside the Chiefs of Staff of Army, Navy and Air Force. All branches work together under the Joint Staff Headquarters during operations and joint missions.
The Armed Forces of Pakistan were formed in 1947 when Pakistan gained independence from British-ruled subcontinent. Since then, the armed forces have played a decisive role in the modern history of Pakistan, fighting significant wars with India in 1947-48, 1965 and 1971. Border clashes with Afghanistan led to the creation of para-military forces to deal with civil unrest and secure border areas. In 2010, the military had approximately 617,000 personnel on active duty with 513,000 in the reserves, 304,000 in the para-military forces, and about 20,000 serving in the Strategic Plans Division forces, almost 1,410,000 in total. The armed forces have a large pool of volunteers, and as such, conscription is not and has never been needed.
Pakistan Armed Forces are the best-organized institution in the country and are highly respected in the civil society. Since the founding of Pakistan, the military has played a vital role in defending the country, promoting a feeling of nationhood and providing a bastion of selfless service. The armed forces are also the most significant contributors to the peacekeeping efforts of the United Nations (UN), with more than 10,000 officers  serving as military advisers in African and Arab countries. Pakistan’s military has also maintained combat divisions and brigade strength presences in the Arab countries, during the Arab-Israel Wars and the first Gulf War, to help the coalition and the Somalian and Bosnian conflicts.
