International Day of UN Peacekeeping Celebrated at MINURSO

Medals Awarded in Recognition of Service and Sacrifice of Peacekeepers
To commemorate the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers and award UN medals to qualified military observers (MILOBs) and Bangladesh Medical Unit (BMU) a ceremony was held at UN Mission for referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) on May 29, 2019. The award ceremony was chaired by Force Commander Major General Zia ur Rehman from Pakistan. The purpose of ceremony was to pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations, for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage and to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives for the cause of peace.
The ceremony commenced with the wreath laying and one-minute silence was observed in the memory of fallen peacekeepers. The Force Commander accompanied by the Mission Chief of Staff laid a floral wreath at the monument of MINURSO. 
The Force Commander addressed MINURSO’s civil and military component gathered for the ceremony, recalling the values and sacrifices of those who served and lost their life for the noble cause of peace. He also appreciated the efforts of military component representing 39 troop contributing countries, who under tough conditions have displayed, beyond personal comfort, a symbol of devotion and veneration of humanity’s common goal of keeping peace in the world and specially this part of the globe.
