In 2002, Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS), a public sector university located in Quetta, the capital city of Balochistan, was founded with the motto to provide quality education and to restore hope in the society. The student body of the university grew from 90 in 2002 to over 10,000 in 2019. The Governor Balochistan is the Chancellor of the university, and the Vice Chancellor is the Chief Executive. BUITEMS is an ISO 9001-2015 certified university and the member of International Association of Universities (IAU), Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), American Society for Quality (ASQ), World Confederation of Businesses (WORLDCOB), Talloires Network and the Association of Quality Assurance Agencies of the Islamic World (IQA).
The medium of instruction at BUITEMS is English. The university is recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and has been declared as an engineering and technology university. All its programs are accredited by the respective councils. It offers 33 undergraduate and 30 graduate programs in 32 disciplines, including 12 engineering programs. These programs are offered in five faculties by 32 departments. The faculties are: Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Faculty of Life Sciences and Informatics, Faculty of Management Sciences, and Faculty of Arts and Basic Sciences. BUITEMS currently has 11,405 students enrolled in its programs, with 9,566 male and 1,839 female students, which are taught by a faculty of 626 members.
A public sector engineering university, BUITEMS is committed to increasing accessibility to education at the national and international level in order to meet the needs of emerging job markets. Recognized by the HEC and accredited by Pakistan Engineering Council, the university is mainly mandated to promote and disseminate knowledge in areas of emerging sciences, engineering, and technology to provide for instruction, training research, demonstration and service in such branches of learning as the university determines from time to time through its statutory system.
The research funding generated by BUITEMS has been constantly increasing over the years and the number of students per faculty is also growing steadily. BUITEMS is making efforts to increase the number of PhD scholars in each faculty and is allocating its resources to offer new PhD programs and strengthen the existing ones for increasing the annual output. It currently has 122 PhDs who serve in different capacities. The university also offers 22 MS and 5 PhD programs.
One of the most important areas of modern science and technology is Artificial Intelligence (AI), types of which are also referred to as Machine Learning, Natural Language Process, Computer Vision and
Deep Learning. In simplified terms, AI means a computer program which mimics human cognition. At least some of the things we associate with other minds, such as learning and problem solving can be done by computers, though not in the same way as we do.
BUITEMS made its place in Google’s Android Developers Challenge (ADC), which is an annual competition. Team BUITEMS created an app “AgriFarm” that helps farmers detect plant diseases and prevent major damage in fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, corn and potatoes.
Difficult times need innovative solutions, and when the world is battling against an unpredictable pandemic, it becomes crucial to discover unprecedented solutions. During the COVID-19 pandemic BUITEMS realized its genuine role as the leading institute by contributing in many dimensions. The engineering faculty produced low cost disinfectants and hand sanitizers. Department of Textile Engineering, FOE&A developed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) material based low-cost hazmat suit. The faculty of Information and Communication Technology contributed by developing an app called, “Trace Together App’. And a team of experts also developed a prototype of an indigenously built ventilator "BUITEMS VENT-I".
Existence of historical, cultural and political influences on such policies demand educationists and scientists to communicate, engage, and work directly with the legislators and public. This will enable the interacting partners to understand each other’s viewpoint, and devise and implement the policies in true spirit.
A number of cadet colleges and educational institutions have been established in Balochistan. The government along with Pakistan Army has made all-out efforts to ensure improved standard of education in the province. It is expected that these incentives and efforts would translate into uplifting the status and standard of education for the children and youth – the future of Pakistan.
